It works by inhibiting the enzyme lanosterol 14α – demethylase, which is involved in the synthesis of ergosterol, a key component of the fungal cell membrane. By blocking ergosterol synthesis, it disrupts the integrity and function of the fungal cell membrane, leading to the death of the fungus. It is effective against a wide range of fungal species, including Aspergillus, Candida, and some rare and emerging fungal pathogens. It is used for the prophylaxis and treatment of invasive fungal infections in immunocompromised patients, such as those with hematological malignancies, undergoing stem cell transplantation, or with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). |
